Wow, what a day! We actually made it to the campground in Lake Charles at 7:30 without incident. I had my doubts going through downtown Houston though.
Let me back up a little and let me first say that I am not a good passenger. I prefer to be in the driver's seat and in control. I realize that statement probably doesn't surprise any of you. Let me also amend my earlier comment about the RV being okay and how it drives and rides like a tank. It doesn't drive down the road, it walks. If any of you have ever pulled a trailer that walks you will know what I'm talking about. The steering is horrible and it takes all your might to just keep it in your lane. You can't see anything out the rearview mirror, and your side mirrors are pretty useless. This made the trip through downtown Houston very ........ terrifying. And Murr at this point is tired of fighting the RV and is dying for a beer.
Our next adventure down this path was a stop on the outskirts of Houston at a Wal-Mart at about 4:00. We only saw 2 other people in the store that had the same skin color as ours. The isles were only big enough for 1 cart and the layout of the store must have been done by a mentally challenged person on drugs. We got the very bare minimum, the most important on the list being some Miller Lite.
I took over the driving at this time (finally) and Murr started popping tops at a rate faster than Big Brown on the track today. I felt more in control behind the wheel and driving the thing was as bad as he'd been telling me, but needless to say I was better at it.
Lindsay's favorite question on the trip wasn't when will we get there, it was, "Are we out of Texas yet?" We finally got to answer her w/ a yes. The campground is nice and the people who run it are very nice and helpful. They made sure we got hooked up properly. The only bad thing about it is it doesn't have a swimming pool, which Lindsay pouted about for about 5 minutes. I thought when I was researching campgrounds that I picked the ones that did, but I obviously didn't. She was a very good traveler. Except for the Texas question she was very patient. Mom, you'll be happy to know that she is enthralled by the toilet and how it works and the fact that she can use it while we're on the road. She has gone "potty" more in the last 8 hours than she usually does in 2 days!
I'm now relaxing w/ a cold one and Lindsay and Murr are preparing hot dogs.
Tomorrow our adventure takes us through Baton Rouge and we'll cross into Mississippi and go up to Jackson. I'd like to think we'll make it to the Tupelo area, but we've agreed that we're only going to drive 8 hours each day. If we do make it to Tupelo, I'll be sure to tell Elvis hello for ya'll.

Tell Lindsay I got my letter and I loved it!! It made my heart happy!
Aunt BremBrem
I'll tell her. I knew you'd love it.
Jayce was born in Lake Charles. We have a lot of memories from there. THANK GOD IH10 now goes through Baton Rouge! The old hwy. had a bridge that, (seemingly), was at least 100 mi. long, and 500 ft. high! It was 4 lanes wide, separated by a train track that ran through the middle. The traffic on it was indescribable, as it was the only bridge that crossed the Mississippi, for miles around. I was coming to Texas from Georgia, and both girls had started running a fever, just this side of Mississippi. I had made a bed in the back of my little Corvair for them, (the seats folded down), and had filled the ice chest. I was having to stop every few miles to dip the towels I had covered the girls with, into the ice water, and re-cover them. I was pulling a little one wheel trailer, which was attached to my bumper, and was loaded higher than my car. I got right up to the top of the bridge, with my hands having a death grip on the steering wheel, when the tire on the trailer blew out.... There are no sides to pull off on the bridge. That little trailer, which was so overloaded, shoved me all the way to the bottom, lifting my little Covair up in the air, first on one side, and then the other. When I reached the bottom and pulled over to the side of the road, I got out to look at the tire, and just collapsed. My knees gave way, and I went down. The girls' fever, by this time, had gone so high, they slept right through it. We had no A/C at that time, and it was so hot, I had to keep the windows rolled down. So, I also had the noise of the traffic and the train to contend with. When I hear "Baton Rouge", I drop to my knees and thank God for sending a little angel to sit on my shoulder on that trip. IH10 runs a little north of the old hwy. They were just building it then. When I read your blog, I ran into the living room and yelled, "THEY ARE GOING TO HAVE TO DRIVE THAT RV OVER THAT BRIDGE!". Fred assured me you wouldn't, so I feel better now. Fred and I are right there on your vacation with you. We are enjoying it so much, being able to re-live our younger days, with all of our memories and travels along the route you are taking! It is our dream to travel them once more before we die, and to find and take pictures, of all the houses where we once lived. If we don't make it, we will have our memories of some of the towns and places as we travel, (in our minds), with you. Thank you so much for allowing us to tag along with you. I can hardly wait until tomorrow! Annie
You hadn't told me that story before, Annie. That's one of those memories you'd like to erase from the brain. Right before we exited off of 10 yesterday for this campground I could see looming up I-10 this HUGE bridge (kind of like the JFK Causeway in Corpus) but this one looked a thousand miles higher. I was thankful I could wait till today when I wasn't so tired to cross it. But the man and woman running this CG said they could tell me an easy way to get around it so I won't have to cross it. Thank you Jesus. I also didn't realize Jayce was born here, what, 41 years ago now? What were ya'll doing here? Fred working here? I'd love for ya'll to be able to go on your trip and I'm happy to share ours with you.
Aren't you going to be posting any photos from along the way, like to a flickr stream or something like that? I would just love to see the final carnage when you snap and start beating Murray over the head with something because he hasn't listened to you. [You do realize you haven't changed since you were a know-it-all little brat following me and Brenda around? ;-)]
I'm going to try figure out how to get some pics posted here in just a bit since we seem to have some time on our hands. (See new post.) As far as the know-it-all little brat comment, I seem to resemble that remark quite well. And BTW, I wasn't following ya'll around, ya'll were just being honored that I allowed ya'll to be in presence of my company!
