Daisy
Daisy is a Lindsay's new dwarf hamster which we brought home on 1-2-09. Lindsay is a little disappointed in the fact that Daisy sleeps all day, but since the cage is in her room and Daisy is active at night it has gotten Lindsay to sleep in her own bed for the past to nights so she can go to sleep watching Daisy play. So that's a BIG plus right there in my book. Go Daisy Go. Lindsay promised before we got Daisy that she would keep her room clean and so far that has worked, but it's only been 2 days. The how-to book that I purchased at the same time as Daisy instructs us that hamster and owner need to get used to each other before any handling and Lindsay is being patient with this process, but is ready to hold her new pet. I'm trying to tell her that a hamster isn't really a pet that you "play" with, but she's not buying that. Will try to get a picture of Daisy posted soon!

Believe it or not, I had hamsters when I was in college. Triple loved those little guys. Did you get Lindsay one of those plastic balls you put the hamster in so it can roll all over the house? Those are the best and constitutes "playing" with the little guy without handling the poor thing half to death.
I had a hamster growing up also, but the memories are vague. I remember having the ball for it to roll around in and I remember it getting loose in the living room and having to chase it. I do not remember what happened to it though. We did get Daisy a ball, but once we got it home discovered that it was broken so I need to return it. My "how to" book tells me though that these balls are not a good thing because they may be "stressful" to the pet and have little ventilation. If I were a hamster I think rolling around in a ball by myself with a little air would be preferable to being squeezed to death by a 7 year old.
I would go with my inner hamster voice if I were you and exchange the ball for a good one. My little guys loved it. I had them at home in Junction one year and the "lead rat" Hemingway, loved to get in the plastic ball and taunt Loyd's dog. I swear to God this rodent would roll right up and trash talk that Yorkie and then just laugh its little rodent backside off from the safety of the plastic. Hysterically funny.
